Task Definition for school assignments may involve two parts:

1) understanding exactly what your teacher is asking you to do and

2) making choices about your topic, if the teacher allows it, within the parameters of the assignment.

To understand exactly what your teacher is asking you to do, carefully read all handouts and take notes regarding any oral directions given in class. Ask your teacher for clarification if you need it.

Making choices may involve the following:

Choosing a topic from a list

Making a broad subject more narrow in scope

Writing a thesis statement that will be the basis of a paper

Deciding what format to use in the final product

Analyzing your audience and purpose

Always keep your DEFINED TASK in mind as you work on your research for the project. Write it down on a piece of paper so you remember exactly what you're trying to do & find.
